Overview

Hair loss is a major concern for many men and women, whether it is caused by age, genetics, hormones, medical conditions or even due to styling practices and/or products. With recent advances in research in the field of hair restoration, new treatments have been created to help combat the condition. Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is an emerging nonsurgical based treatment for both men and women that is showing remarkable results in slowing down, stopping and even reversing hair loss. PRP has also shown promising outcomes in patients with alopecia areata and thinning eyebrows. Plano, TX hair transplant surgeon, Dr. Joseph Yaker, is one of only a small handful of hair restoration surgeons to offer Placenta-Derived Extracellular Matrix Therapy. He includes this powerful blend of growth factors and bioactive proteins to help strengthen the function of your hair, leading to longer, thicker, healthier hair.

About ECM Therapy

Platelets are a component of blood that contain specific growth factors. These growth factors, once introduced into the scalp, activate your own stem cells and help generate new hair growth by stimulating dormant hair follicles, and preserve and thicken hair. It is also used during hair transplant surgery to assist in healing of the skin, and helps stimulate hair transplants to grow while improving hair graft survivability. While PRP therapy has recently received a lot of attention, it has been in use for several decades. PRP is currently used in many areas of medicine, including orthopedic and sports medicine, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery and cardiovascular medicine, as the growth factors found in platelets have been shown to accelerate wound healing, tissue repair and skin rejuvenation.

Stem cells are naturally occurring cells in the body that play a vital role in the body’s growth and repair process by having the ability to differentiate into a very specific kind of cell. More specifically, stem cells found within amniotic fluid contain a rich source of proteins, carbohydrates, hyaluronic acids and growth factors that act as a structural support to surrounding cells. When using placenta-derived extracellular matrix with PRP, this creates a powerful mixture of growth factors, bioactive proteins and stem cells to boost the hair growth response. The placental tissue is received from consenting, pre-screened donors during caesarean birth and are processed at an FDA regulated laboratory.

What to Expect

As a non-invasive solution, the PRP with placenta-derived extracellular matrix therapy is a short 60-minute in-office visit. The process begins with acquiring a small amount of blood from the patient and placing the blood sample in a special machine that spins the blood at high speeds in order to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components. Next, a local anesthetic is applied to the scalp and the concentrated platelet rich plasma is reintroduced into areas of the patient’s scalp that show hair thinning. Finally, microneedling is performed on the scalp to create micro-trauma and micro-channels into the skin, which activates the PRP and allows them to penetrate deep into the skin. Dr. Yaker’s protocol for non-surgical management of hair loss consists of an initial treatment, followed by maintenance treatments approximately every nine months to one year.

Are There Risks?

Because PRP is made from your own blood, there is no chance of allergy or rejection. In addition, the use of amniotic fluid doesn’t cause rejection or allergic reaction when injected into a patient.

Recovery & Results

There is no downtime following this procedure, with virtually no limitations or restrictions. Most commonly, patients may develop some redness, minimal swelling and mild tenderness to the treated areas. These symptoms may last up to 48 hours. While results differ for each patient, cosmetic benefits are typically seen around 4 to 6 months after the first treatment, and will continue to improve up to a full year following treatment. As PRP is not a permanent solution for hair loss, repeat treatments are recommended every 12-18 months. It is important to note that PRP does not grow new hair follicles in areas where you are already bald. It is used to help reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will produce healthier, thicker, longer hair fibers.

Follow-Up

Routine follow up visits are an important part of Dr. Yaker’s individualized HairScan Plan to preserve and restore hair with any form of non-surgical therapy. By tracking each patient’s hair growth progress (length, thickness, density—how much hair is present in an area of scalp) every 90 days using advanced hair and scalp software and scanning technology, Dr. Yaker can determine whether the specific treatment(s) is effective and tailor treatments according to each patient’s response.
